The Martin family lived in this double house for generations until it was torn down and replaced after World War II. It was a family house passed down through the generations. The father, George owned Georgetown Cleaning Company on Wisconsin Avenue and worked at Florence Market at 21st Street and Florida Avenue NW. The mother was a domestic worker. Her family were long time Georgetowners. She would get the children up early each morning and because both parents worked she would take the children across the street to family friend, “Aunt Polly.” Their son, Cornelius Martin, who moved into a home nearby at 1523 26th Street, worked at the Navy Yard. Their cousin, Josephine Carol Smith, who also lived at the house, taught in the public schools, and retired as supervisor and director of the elementary department.
