Caleb Hawkins, the grandfather of the four Gaskins daughters – Pauline Gaskins Mitchell, Gladys Gaskins, Helen Jackson, and Lucille Clark – arrived in Georgetown in 1865 and settled in the Herring Hill community. He later purchased three houses on Popular Street and one on O Street and built another in 1882 in the 2700 block of P Street. He was a Mt. Zion Church officer and a restaurant proprietor. Caleb Hawkins held accounts at the Freedman Bank. On one of his deposit slip he wrote,” My wife may use my account.” His final resting place in Mt Zion cemetery.
